Concrete interlocking tile
The default choice for most modern Southampton housing. Economical, quick to lay, comfortable 60-year lifespan, huge range of profiles and colours. Fades over 15–25 years but remains functional.
Clay plain tile
Traditional, beautiful, and holds its colour indefinitely. Best on period property and in conservation areas. More expensive than concrete but often the right choice for character properties.
Natural slate
The premium option. 80–120 year lifespan, unrivalled appearance, non-combustible, low maintenance. Welsh slate is the gold standard; Spanish and Brazilian offer excellent quality at more accessible prices.
Fibre cement slate
A modern engineered slate that gives the natural slate look at concrete-tile prices. 30–50 year lifespan, uniform appearance, straightforward installation. A sensible compromise for many properties.
Standing seam metal
Zinc, aluminium and copper in standing-seam form suit contemporary architecture. Long life, sharp aesthetic, and — in the case of copper — a beautiful patinated finish over decades.
