Slate Roofing Southampton

Traditional and modern slate roofs, laid to last a century.

Slate is one of the most beautiful and durable roofing materials available. A well-laid natural slate roof will comfortably last 80 to 120 years, and it suits the character of many older Southampton properties perfectly. We install natural Welsh, Spanish and Brazilian slate as well as high-quality fibre cement alternatives such as Marley Eternit and Redland Cambrian. Every slate roof we lay is fixed to BS 5534 with copper or stainless nails, on treated battens over a breathable membrane.

Common problems we solve

Nail sickness

Corroded nails cause slates to slip in batches. A full strip and re-lay with copper or stainless nails is the permanent fix.

Delaminating slates

Cheap or end-of-life slates flake at the edges and shed thin layers. We can identify this on survey and specify replacement.

Wind-lift on ridges

Traditional mortar-bedded ridges can lift in high wind. Modern dry-fix systems eliminate the risk.

Poor valley detailing

Cement fillets and cheap valleys leak. We use dressed lead or GRP valleys detailed to shed water cleanly.

Our process

  1. Step 1

    Slate specification

We help you choose the right slate — natural or fibre cement — for the property, budget and planning context.

  2. Step 2

    Preparation

Scaffold erected, old covering stripped, timbers inspected, breathable membrane and treated battens laid.

  3. Step 3

    Laying

Slates are graded on site, holed and laid with correct margin, gauge and side lap. Every slate is properly fixed.

  4. Step 4
