Clear gutters, downpipes and outlets
Check for slipped or missing tiles from ground level
Look for cracked or missing mortar on ridges and hips
Check that valleys are clear and lead is sound
After storms
Walk around and look up — no ladder required
Note any missing or lifted tiles
Photograph anything visibly wrong for insurance
Every five years
Have a proper external inspection carried out by a qualified roofer
Consider moss treatment if growth is heavy
Renew any perished silicone or sealant around rooflights
