Immediately after the storm
Stay safe and stay off the roof
Photograph the damage from ground level from multiple angles
Note the date, time and weather conditions
Move furniture and possessions away from any interior leaks
Contact a roofer
Call a local, established roofer for an emergency make-safe. Beware of doorstep 'storm chasers' — legitimate local firms are known in the community and easily verifiable.
A proper make-safe uses tarpaulin, temporary flashings or roof tiles to prevent further water ingress until a permanent repair is scheduled.
Your insurance claim
Most home insurance policies cover storm damage where the wind speed exceeds 55 mph. Your roofer should provide photographs, a written assessment and a quotation for permanent repair.
Be wary of any tradesperson who insists on being paid directly by you and dealing with the insurer afterwards — legitimate contractors are happy to work with insurers.
Permanent repair
Storm damage repairs range from a handful of replaced tiles to major re-roofing after significant structural damage. Any hidden damage will be identified during the permanent repair — a good roofer flags this early to avoid claim complications later.
